This is my first time back to Taiwan since I was 5 years old and I was super excited at all the possibilities! Needless to say I brought empty suitcases and filled them up to the brim before coming back! lol One of the places that I was most excited to visit was 7 Eleven as I heard it was completely different from what the US offered. There is literally one of these or another chain that is 24/7 every block or half block in Taipei, Taiwan.
I was happy to find out that there was one DIRECTLY across from my hotel and needless to say I was there every day at least once or more. The one thing that I was looking forward to the most was getting my fill on Yakult! I HATE that the US charges a ridiculous CRV on those tiny @$$ bottles, which cannot be recycled! I would be okay with the charge if you could actually recycle it. In Taiwan, there is no such thing as CRV and the drink is so cheap. It's only 8 NT and it was worth it! I probably drank over 30 of those suckers in the short week I was there lol.
The 7 Eleven also offers a variety of prepared foods and what I loved was the onigiris! Cheap and tasty. They are offered as combo meals too, but I didn't quite like the drinks so I just started buying them individually. The onigiris run about 25 NT, which is less than $1! Oh how I already miss Taiwan! lol My favorite flavor was the wasabi salmon.
Each store may offer a slightly different choice. Some offered tea eggs or odens, which was nice. You can purchase a wide variety of snacks and drinks. There are some great instant noodles that you can buy and immediately add hot water to and eat on the spot.
The fun part is you are 'rewarded' for shopping there. They have monthly programs of special items that you can purchase at a discount price once you collect enough stickers. Somehow in the short time we were there, we collected enough stickers and ended up trading it in 4 times to collect the item. Of course all the desirable items like the cute blanket and footwarmer were sold out everywhere, but we still chose something fun. Be sure to check out the 7 Elevens if you've never been to Taiwan. I already miss them! =9

Many years ago I went to the Espetus Churrascaria in San Francisco and was very unimpressed.  So why would I go back to try Espetus Churrascaria again?  Well, Ms. Lin Guide said that she went to the San Mateo location and found that it tasted much better than the one in San Francisco.  She also raved about this cut of meat that was like pork belly bacon.  So.... I had to give it another try!
They have a small salad bar with some interesting selections.  I liked that they offered guacamole, mango salad, and chicken salad.  Still, I wish they had a wider variety that other churrascarias provide.  Oh well, guess I will just have to eat the meats! =9
My favorite reason to eat Brazilian BBQ is so I can get my hands on some delightful Pan de Quiejo! I just wished that the bread had its own basket to keep warm.
I decided to play with my food and used the delightful bread to make my own mini sliders with great cuts of meat! It was fun and tasty.  It was fun to try out with different types/cuts of meat to add a little oomph.
One of the specialties here is that they offer Roasted Pineapples.  Many people love grilled pineapple and I loved the presentation.  They use whole fresh pineapples and slice them table-side.
My favorite cut is the Picanha.  It's always the most flavorful and has the best texture in my opinion.  The best cut is to get it when it's hot off the grill because the flavor is maintained on one side, while the other is still juicy.
Lunch is always cheaper than dinner, but the weekday lunch did not offer the mysterious pork belly bacon like cut.  We decided to go on a weekend for lunch as they still offered the pork belly and less than their dinner price.  Almost everything offered on the dinner menu was served for lunch on the weekend.
All in all the meats were not bad but I wasn't over the moon.  I did enjoy the pork belly cut when it was fresh off the grill.  It's almost like a tasty porchetta! We had to request it to get this meat, so be sure to ask if it does not come.  The Espetus in San Mateo is a lot better than the San Francisco location, but that's not hard to do.  They just opened the Fogo de Chao in San Francisco, so it will be tough to see which place I'd go next time up in the Bay Area.

The food in Vegas keeps on getting better and better.  To really enjoy Vegas, you have to go off The Strip.  Don't get me wrong, I like fine dining but to experience the real culture and fun of Vegas you have to explore! I always have a car so I can stay off The Strip and go to my favorite eats and to find new ones.  The Goodwich was recommended by another store owner nearby and I have been wanting to try this place for a while.
They use to have foie gras sandwiches that I would have died for! What you have to love is that you can add crispy chicken skin into the sandwiches.  Drool drool!! They had me at that ingredient.  If you are a health nut and don't enjoy the wonders of crispy chicken skin, then this place is definitely not for you.  Also... you are missing out!! The skin is one of the best parts and if you won't eat it, I will happily do it for you! =D
The Goodwich is a small stall on the corner of Dino's parking lot.  You can park, order, and they will kindly bring the food to your car as well.  There is limited seating and depending on what time of the year you go, it may be too hot or cold to sit outside.  Ms. Lin Guide and I immediately began munching on our tasty sandwiches.  Best to eat fresh and hot!
Their menu often changes but there are always intriguing concoctions and tantalizing choices.  For our first time, we decided to get the Patty on rye.  Inside was ground beef, smoked cream cheese, onion, and pepper jack.  Of course we added the crispy chicken skin for the extra Oooooomph! The rye was beautifully colored and nicely grilled.  I love the crisp outer texture combined with all the rich flavors of the sandwich and delicious crispy chicken skin.  The bread was so full of butter that it basically melted in your mouth.  I think I am beginning to drool onto the computer! lol
We were split on the 2nd sandwich as they didn't offer the foie gras at this time.  Ms. Lin Guide decided on the Cuban-esque on white, since we had rye on the other sandwich.  Inside was pork butt & belly, ham, swiss, and pickle maystard.  The flavors were good and a slightly different take on your typical Cuban sandwich.  Of course we added the crispy chicken skin for an extra kick.  For me, this was solid but it didn't really blow my mind away as the Patty did.
All in all I really enjoyed their sandwiches and the owner was very nice.  I'd definitely go back for a quick bite and to see what new sandwiches they have concocted.

One of the best lunches I have had in all of France was in Lyon at L'Ourson Qui Boit.  Just the name itself was so adorable and alluring on their business cards.
Ms. Lin did a lot of research and found this quaint establishment.
First we took the metro to the Griffon - Royale neighborhood where along the way you can also check out the Roman Theatres at Minimes.
The summer scenery was beautiful with the sun shining brightly, but at a price... the sweltering heat.
It's refreshing to see the lush foliage in a city.
L'Ourson Qui Boit is very close to the station.  For a two course lunch it is only 14 euros and for a full three course lunch it is only 17 euros.  Even with the dollar being weak, it is a great deal for fine cuisine.  They serve French cuisine with Japanese influences.
Everyone there was Asian and spoke perfect French.  Don't worry, they speak English as well for those who speak limited French.  They immediately greet you with a smile and seat you right away.  I would definitely recommend a reservation as it is a small restaurant and quite busy.
Their simple and classic decor is very welcoming.  The doors are open throughout, allowing a refreshing breeze to course through.  We started the magnificent lunch off with a glass of sweet wine and my favorite Orangina bottle.
First they bring some fresh baked French wheat bread to get your taste buds going.  I leaned against the stone wall to further cool off from the heat.
There are only two choices for appetizer and entree.  Both looked amazing and it is great when you have a foodie in crime to share and try all the dishes.  My favorite dish, almost for the whole trip, was the Filet de Canette en Teriyaki with a hint of wasabi.  It was the most succulent, melt in your mouth slices of heaven.  The flavor was on point with a mix of savory and sweet.  Slices of duckling was placed atop the crisp shell and dressed with fresh green with eggplant on the side.  Everything came together harmoniously.  I almost wanted to order 2 or 3 more sittings of the lunch just so I could have more of this! Sharing is bad! **that's how I felt after the first bite**
The other appetizer was also great but I love the canette and still dream about it! For seafood lovers, they offered crab with Ricotta and tomato confite in a "creme froide de laitue au basilic".  It was a savory concoction.  The portions are very generous.  Everything is beautifully plated and well thought out.
For the "plats" they offered a delicate poached fish swimming in a seafood broth made with small shrimp, Chinese cabbage, and small peas.  I must say that French people love peas as it has become a theme.  The fish was tender and the seafood flavor was very strong.
We also got the the Chicken served in a Foie Gras Creme and an assortment of vegetables.  This dish was much lighter in flavor until you mix it with some of the foie gras creme to add that extra layer of flavor.  The chicken was very tender.
They had three choices for desserts.  After a long debate, we decided to have the Raspberry Tarte drizzled in a caramel sauce and served with a Caramel Ice Cream.  French people love raspberries (framboise) but it is my kryptonite as I disdain the taste.  Ms. Lin loves caramel so we ordered everything with caramel.  The tarte and ice cream were rich and creamy.
Ms. Lin chose the Creme Caramel with Chocolate and a Fruit Salad surrounding a White Chocolate Ice Cream.  I enjoyed the crisp pastries atop the ice cream.  This was much lighter and refreshing.  It's nicely paired with the rich creme caramel.
Of course we had to end the meal like Europeans would, with a piping hot cup of espresso!
All in all this was definitely one of the best meals throughout the trip and for a great price! You don't have to break the bank while in one of the greatest cities in France.  The ambiance, service, and food were all wonderful.  I can't stop thinking about the canette that throughout the trip I was looking for something similar anywhere I can.  If only I wasn't there for a day or so, I would go back again and again! Be sure to add this to your to-do-list if you ever go to Lyon.  Also plan some extra days as they have a wonderful culinary assortment of restaurants to keep you busy!

I have been meaning to try out Bluefin in Laguna Beach but the long drive down has always stopped me. Ms. Lin was in town and I suggested that we finally try this place to see if they really had the best lunch omakase in town.
As many people know, I love eating sushi and I am always looking for tasty omakases in Orange County.
The normal prices here are pretty steep IMHO, but for lunch their omakase is only $30 for a 6-course and $50 for an 8-course.  It's a better deal to do the $30 because for $10 more on the $50 then you can have 2 lunch omakases.  I prefer 12 courses than just having 2 more courses, especially since they wouldn't even be more sushi courses.
To start off the meal they served a duo of Ankimo (Monk Fish Liver) with Caviar and Gold Flakes on top and a Red Snapper Roll that's wrapped in Cucumber with Gobo and Daikon.  I thought the ankimo was not bad mixed with the caviar and tangy ponzu.  The gold flakes were pretty but mainly for show.  I rather have another gold bracelet than to consume it, but still it's a nice presentation.
The red snapper (Tai) was refreshing.  They put a lot of thought to the presentation of these dishes.  The cucumber was thinly sliced and wrapped around the fish delicately.  Having gobo at the center helps to enhance the savory component.  I love gobo and the crunchy texture.  This roll was very smooth and light.
Next came the Sashimi course.  I was smart and asked that they replace my tuna (maguro) as I am not a fan of it unless it is the fatty area known as toro.  They kindly replaced it with a generous helping of salmon (sake).  The yellow tail (hamachi) was very tender and melted in my mouth.  They also had mackerel (aji) on the plate.
In total there were 6 slices of sashimi that were all very fresh and tasty.  They also have their house made sauce on the bottom that really complemented the dish.  It almost felt like a light salad.  The tangy grilled onions were savory and flavorful.  Be sure to take the shiso leaf in the back and wrap it around a tasty slice to kick the flavor up a notch.
Behind the sushi bar they have a blackboard with specials.  The first thing that caught my eye was the fact that they had razor clams.  I LOVE RAZOR CLAMS! The best way to have them is a la plancha with a pinch of sea salt.  Here the board said it would be Sautéed Razor Clams for $17.

Again, the prices are a little steep here but I had to try it since I hadn't had razor clams since Spain.  This dish was a bit disappointing because it lacked any real flavor.  It was mixed with thin slices of asparagus and a tiny bit of garlic.  I really wished they added more flavor to bring out the natural taste of the razor clam.  Kind of wished we didn't order this, especially for the price.
For the hot dish they served Grilled Halibut with Truffle Oil and Pink Peppercorn.  The aromatic flavor of the truffle emanated through the air.  I thought the fish was nicely grilled and seasoned.  It's a simple yet complicated dish with the herbs and pepper.  The fish was served over a bed of rice that soaked in all the flavors.
One of my favorite things in the world is Foie Gras! To my surprise they actually had seared foie gras as an appetizer with Chilean sea bass, how can I say no to that delightful combination???  YUM! The appetizer is just called Chilean Sea Bass and Foie Gras for $25.  I thought the presentation was very nice as they layered the sea bass with grilled foie gras and a shitake mushroom.  The shiso leaf is fried and topped with a gold leaf to enhance the presentation.
This is a great combination of flavors.  The added kick is the white truffle oil that releases a heavenly fragrance throughout the vicinity.  I thought the foie gras was nicely seared and savory with a hint of sweetness.  The sea bass was nicely cooked and melted in my mouth.  I made sure to use each slice to absorb up some of the sauce.  The sauce was glazed onto the seared foie gras and shitake mushroom.  Even the special berry on the side flavor was super tasty.  I enjoyed how it was nicely soaked in syrup.  A great way to complement all the savory components.  This was definitely one of the best things and I often think about driving down for some more.  If only this place was closer, I'd be there every day for this! Well good thing Bluefin isn't or I'd be destitute soon. lol
Before the dessert was the Sushi course.  For our lunch they served 5 sushi pieces and 2 slices of a roll.  Ms. Lin got the tuna while I had the Kanpachi (amberjack), which was topped with yuzu chili peppers.  I must say, I made the smart choice to avoid tuna because the kanpachi was very tasty and paired with my favorite yuzu chili pepper.  The spicy and salty seasoning really brings out the natural sweetness of the fish.
All the sushi was very fresh and tasty.  I enjoyed the Albacore with their special sauce and green onions.  The albacore melted in my mouth and had a smooth texture.
They also had Ebi, Shrimp, as part of the sushi platter.  Everything else was really good and this is the only regular sushi that I wish wasn't there but it's not surprising.  It's always your typical sushi to add on because it is the cheapest.  Still, everything else was great.
Another typical fish is the White Fish, which was fine.  It was fresh but I am never a big fan of white fish since it has a little chewier texture.  I prefer my fish to be tender and fatty.  =D
They also have a delicious slice of Hotate, Scallops.  I always enjoy the sweetness and tender texture of raw scallop.  If you haven't had raw scallops, you are missing out.  As long as it is fresh, it's succulent and heavenly.
The Eel California Roll was nicely prepared.  I liked how the Unagi, Eel, was crisp and warm.  This roll is simple but a good ole favorite.
Along with the sushi platter is the Soup with a house made Fish Ball.  Inside are puffed grains and thinly sliced daikon inside.  The soup was very light and piping hot.  It's a nice way to cleanse the palate, but I am not a huge fan of these kinds of clear broth.  Luckily Ms. Lin is around to help finish my soup.
For dessert they served a Pear soaked in Plum Wine with Jelly and fresh Vanilla Ice Cream.  This was not a bad dessert but I personally dislike the taste of alcohol.  Still, I know that many people would enjoy the fruit that's been soaked in plum wine.  I thought the vanilla ice cream was extremely tasty.  The flavors were incredible.  It was the best part of the dish.  I wished dessert was just a big bowl of this ice cream.  Yum!
All in all I was very satisfied with their lunch omakase.  The price was very reasonable for how much they normally charge for their dishes.  BlueFin is very fresh and tasty, but super pricey for sushi.  I recommend coming here for lunch because it is a much better deal.  They are actually pretty busy for lunch so be sure to make a reservation and if you have an Open Table account then be sure to get your points.
I actually came back the next day for dinner.  It is very posh and can be a little snooty from the staff but the food is good.  The chefs seem friendly and know what they are doing.  I took some friends there who had a toddler and they do not have any high chairs.  Even though I am not a fan of children at restaurants, I don't think that they should be so judgmental to my friends who brought their child and were very sweet about the fact that they didn't have high chairs.  Minus a point for this, but that was dinner, the lunch staff have been fine.
