After all these years, I've finally made my way to Hawaii! There's so much to explore and so little time.  Ms. Lin Guide and I came here for my birthday celebration.  It's important that you plan on renting a car to explore the island and get around.  The drive is quite scenic and full of good eats! We spent a full day exploring North Shore.  One place that I researched and caught my eye was Kahuku Farms because they offer a wide variety of local products ranging from lotion to butters to syrups and more! They even serve drinks and home made desserts.  The grilled banana bread is a must! It caught my eye and I just had to try it.  They cover it with decadent caramel and vanilla haupia.  So delicious!

Their 'cafe' is almost just like a small street stand.  The people were very friendly and you can sample all the products they sell before you purchase.  What really caught my interest is lilikoi, which is passion fruit.  The syrup tastes just like a fresh passion fruit, of course enhances with sugar.  I've beehn trying to find a real tasting passion fruit syrup.  So many options are just chemically made and don't have the same fragrant aroma that theirs have.  If you are going to chemically make passion fruit syrup, people please taste what a real passion fruit tastes like! Lol. I bought two bottles for home.
Picture from Kahuku Farms website

They also offer lilikoi butter and varieties of jam.  At the stand they offer bulk deals if you buy 4, which was not bad.  Everything tasted very fresh and had a smooth texture.  They would go great on bread or pancakes.  Both Ms. Lin Guide and I picked up a bunch for ourselves and to give away as gifts.  If you buy $40 worth of products, you receive a free tote as well.  Before I checked out, I heard. Someone talk about a secret code for extra discount.  Hint : find one of their brand ambassadors to get the code and sign up for rewards.  We bought so much that we left with 3 rewards.  😇

It's getting harder and harder to find good happy hour deals.  Brio Tuscan Grille has always offered a pretty decent selection of happy hour appetizers and drinks.  What's even rare is that the prices are quite reasonable!

For about $5 you can get their Beef Carpaccio, which is quite reasonable.  They definitely don't skimp on portion size.  I always order one for myself as I don't share my meat! Lol. The carpaccio is always light and refreshing.  This appetizer contains four of the five food groups, so I'm counting it as a healthy dish.  😇

Their Chicken Pesto Flatbread is also a must that's only $5.  Be sure to ask for their fresh Parmesan cheese to give it that extra kick.  I enjoy the crispy texture of the flatbread mixed with a tasty pesto sauce and shavings of chicken on top.  Definitely eat it fresh and hot from the oven.

For the holiday season they offer a gift card special.  If you buy $100 worth then you will receive a $25 bonus gift card.  You can even use it for happy hour, which is an even better deal.  To my surprise, they brought out a small bottle of their olive oil.  Perfect for holiday cooking!

For fans of the HBO show “Silicon Valley,” one of my favorite scenes is when the character Gavin Belson, CEO of Hooli, tells his team that “the bear is sticky with honey” after making tea. Hilarity ensues as his team then spent days to decipher his comment as shome metaphor and eventually brought in an actual bear for an upcoming product launch. You have to watch that episode!

As a result, I’ve never been able to look at another bear bottle of honey without laughing!

Nonetheless, these adorable bottles of honey are constant staples in my cabinet. They are good not just for tea and other drinks, they also make a much healthier and more natural substitute for sugar/sweeteners in cooking. I use honey in everything from curing my cold (honey and lemon/ginger do wonders) to marinating chicken/ribs/pork chops to topping my dessert (especially ice cream) plus much more.

Sweet Harvest offers a good variety of honey, from your standard honey to a craft line that includes monofloral sources such as orange blossom and lychee. They also offer organic and non-GMO products as well.

Who has time for cooking these days? I actually do but I'm too lazy to cook all the time. You know what I mean. 😁. I was browsing through H Mart and they had some tasty samples.

They were sampling a bunch of Pulmone products that actually motivated me to purchase. I was even more motivated since they were simple to make. The Pork and Glass Noodles Potstickers were super tasty and reminded me of the Chinese chive pockets. Although the skin used is different, the filling tastes very similar. It's flavorful enough not to need any dipping sauce. I personally like it more crispy so you can keep them on the grill longer until golden brown.
The Ddukbokki Kit was soft and flavorful. I have yet to make it but I like that the kit includes seaweeds rolls that you grill on the side to add in. It provides a mix of soft with a hint of crispy texture. For those of you who like sweet with a hint of spicy, this would be perfect.

Ever since my first trip to Paris eons ago, I've been going to Cafe Angelina for their famous African hot chocolate served with Chantilly cream.  They offer a wide variety of French pastries and typical cafe items. On my first trip I bought their famous African chocolate shavings to bring back and make my own hot chocolate.  Sadly it wasn't nearly as good because I'm sure they slow churn the chocolate at the cafe to give that velvety thick texture. When you make it at home it is so watery.  Now they actually sell the chocolate drink in a bottle.  I've bought some but haven't had a chance to drink them yet.  The consistency looks more like what's served at the cafe.

The African hot chocolate is delicious but it can be a lot of sweetness in one sitting.  Now I tend to just share it with someone so that I don't get sweeted out.  I've been a few times in summer and I now get the iced African chocolate that's not as overwhelming.  It is still sweet but very refreshing in the heat.  I feel the hot chocolate is more filling than the iced chocolate but when it is hot outside, I'd definitely recommend the iced to cool down and relax.  Personally I love their decor that gives me this majestic and nostalgic feeling.  My favorite location is the one near the Louvre where you can also peruse around for some great scenery and photo ops.  ^_~

Pic pulled from Whisps' website

If you love cheese, you'll love Whisps Parmesan Crisps! Ever since I first found them in Costco, they have become one of my favorite items there! You could eat them as a snack or add them to any dish.  They would go great in salads to add texture or a hamburger and more.  Personally, I just eat them like you would with potato chips! They are made from real cheese so I'm going to 'consider' this one of the 'healthier' snacks lol.  I know I may be lying to myself a little, but I can't help but munch on these! Lol
They offer a wide variety of flavors.  I only know of the original because that all Costco sells but at the Fancy Food Show they finally had a booth and sampled their new flavors.  Now they have asiago and cheddar cheese crisps.  If only Costco sold them! I'd buy them all because I need it in bulk! Lol Recently Costco even had them on sale and I picked up a few bags.  It was hard not buying a whole case!

Pulled from Irvins' website

So what's the hottest trend in Asia these days?  Apparently salted egg has made a huge come back! Ms. Lin Guide has brought a plethora of snacks from Taiwan and Singapore all consisting of salted egg.  It has always been a popular item with Asians but in the past year or so it's now in every snack possible.  Even the sweet ones! Lol
I personally detest most egg items, especially salted egg in my moon cake and the likes.  So when Ms. Lin Guide decided to fly just to Singapore for a snack made with salted eggs, I thought she was crazy.  Well crazier than normal lol 😇.  She was also inspired by the movie Crazy Rich Asians, but later she admits it was really for the snacks.  She absolutely looooves the Irvins Salted Egg Fish Skins!
Apparently they were so sought after that you are limited on how much you can buy in store as they couldn't produce enough to keep up with demand! In preparation for this, Ms. Lin Guide went prepared and ordered online to make sure she can buy enough to bring back to last a good while.  They offer the salted egg on a variety of items.  She brought us the original fish skins, potato chips, and spicy fish skins.  It was a savory taste buffet at home! Lol

Everything was so crisp and fresh.  Even the bags itself state that they are dangerously addicting! Once you start snacking, you just can't stop.  The scary part is how much cholesterol you ingest from just one bag! Warning to those with cholesterol problems! Lol  Usually I enjoy spicy food but the spicy fish skins were a bit much.  It's actually decently spicy but it over powers the flavor of the salted egg in my opinion.  The fish skins were delightfully crisp with tons of salted egg crumbles surrounding it.  I could sit and eat the original fish skins for a long while but not as long as I could eat the chips! Normally I'm all about meat or seafood, but the chips felt much lighter and were much dangerous because I could easily eat one or two bags in one sitting.  So dangerous!

These snacks are actually quite pricey and not the easiest to get.  Good news, their popularity has started to spread worldwide.  They now have a store in Taiwan so Ms. Lin Guide can easily get them.  I took a quick look and they are available online from specialty sites, of course at a higher price.  Luckily I have my connections and an awesome Ms. Lin Guide to bring them back for me! 😉

Pics pulled from Sartori Cheese's website

During one of my fine cheese sprees, I came upon a new delight.  They were sampling the Sartori Provence herbed cheese and it was delicious! I couldn't leave the market without picking up two wedges for myself.  The herbs are so fragrant and really complement the savory cheese.  It's a hard cheese so perfect to slice into cubes or thin rectangles, depending on your own preference.  I are mine with some low sodium roast beef.  So refreshing! Other times I just ate the cheese by itself, it's addicting!

Sartori is always at the Fancy Food Show with a huge display and tons of different cheese wheels to try.  I never really paid much attention as they have a huge portion of the halls solely dedicated to cheeses, but now I'm a fan so I'll be hunting for that booth.  Maybe I'll find some new fave this year.  😉

For my birthday we decided to travel to Croatia.  Luckily Ms. Lin Guide has status for Star Alliance that allowed us one free check-in luggage.  Even though Croatia Airlines was a little more pricey but they were the only ones to offer direct flights and we can get some mileage plus one luggage.
Surprisingly they actually serve snacks on the flight.  Usually flights within the EU are considered domestic like the US, so we were surprised that they provided a nice little treat.  I like that they are providing a taste of Croatia and some cultural information.  Before our trip I did a bit of research about Croatian specialties and olives were on the list.  The olive oil was very fragrant.  I enjoyed the savory cheese cubes and tried some of the olives as well.  The pillows with Dalmatian herbs were richly seasoned but quite thick and dry.  They were flavorful but definitely makes you thirsty after consumption.  Still, I'm not complaining as this is pretty nice considering it is a free airline snack.  :)

Ms. Lin Guide needed to find a place with wi-fi nearby and Royal Tea for the bill.  The staff seemed friendly.  They offer a happy hour after 6 pm but we were too early.  I wanted to utilize the deal as they offer my favorite salted cheese.  Ms. Lin Guide did get a drink and it was just so-so.  Even though we were there long enough to reach happy hour, I did not buy a drink.

However, I did try their egg puff because they offered cheese and other interesting toppings as add-ons.  At first I though the cheese was on top and it turned out the cheese is placed inside.  Unfortunately it wasn't really cheeses and you can barely taste the difference.  The egg puff was so-so.  I do like message on their back wall and they do have a variety of games available for their clients, but I feel most Asian tea places offer this as well.  Overall it is just an okay place, I'd rather go to other tea places nearby.

Looking for some tea with real fruits?  Elephant Tea offers a variety of teas to choose from.  Their signature Elephant fruit tea is a passion fruit tea filled with fresh fruits.  When I say 'filled', I really mean filled! Lol if you take out just one slice of the watermelon, the amount of tea goes down by 20% and they have two slices in there.  The funniest part was that they even put a baby tomato inside.  Ms. Lin Guide and I were a little befuddled but had a good laugh.
They offer free wi-fi and the staff was pretty friendly.  I liked their cute decor.  It has a nice relaxing atmosphere and hip feeling.  A good place for friends together and chat.
The drink itself was not bad but not worth the price.  I liked their huge square cups and that the fork was attached.  They definitely used fresh ingredients and even fresh passion fruit.  If only there was more to drink.  After eating all the fruits there's barely any drink left.  Even though the fruit might be more expensive, I personally rather have more of the drink honestly.

As I mentioned before, I'm very into drinks that come in cool bottles! Even though I was on crutches, I still made my way to Icy Cream Roll because of their fun drinks.  They were very busy at night so I went again in the day time and it was a much shorter wait.
They offer 'butterfly' teas that are blue and beautifully colored together with their lemonades.  The bottles are actually really fun because it serves as an infused as well.  You scan unscrew the top from the bottom and see the separation.  The drinks are beautiful and fun when you mix the colors together.  Alas, the drinks themselves are not very good... Which is too bad because I love the bottle!
Another trend are ice cream rolls, which they offer as well.  For those who dare, they offer durian here and it is pretty flavorful.

All in all the decor is super cute with ice cubes as seats on astro turf.  They also have a neon lit hallway to the bathroom that's great for photo ops.  Lots of fun stuff to take pictures of here.  If only the drinks were better, I'd go back.  It's more of a one time fun trip rather than any place I'd frequent.

On our most recent short trip to Vegas, I wanted to take the time to check out the M&M and Coca Cola store.  It's been so long since I've visited the M&M store and I had find memories of the Coca Cola Museum in Atlanta.  Both stores were designed purely for fun and shopping. So if you like the respective brands and products then you will love it.
What I really wanted to do was taste the World of Coca Cola and see what other flavors are floating around the world.  Whilst in line we were attracted to the delectable floats! I think we were a little confused on the sodas that came with the float as you can't choose.  Warning: they come with regular US soda and not the international sodas.  There is 3 set options : international soda, float, and a combo of both.  If you want the fun international flavors then choose the first set, but if you want ice cream the choose the float set.  I wish we chose the combo of both because I really wanted to taste the international sodas! Why don't they make an international float set?  That would be the best of both worlds! Still the float set we got was a lot of fun and imaginative.  A lot of combos that I would never have tried.  We all agreed that the traditional root beer float still tastes the best together as it is such a classic combo :D.

Beware of the scary bear and photos the offer! I thought it was an online thing you can retrieve but it's like a Disneyland ride photo to make you purchase, MINUS the ride lol.  Still it was kind of fun and now I can say I was 'bitten' by a bear lol.  Needless to say.... I bought the photo package.  **hanging head down in shame** The gimmick works! Lol

Roasting Water has been one of my favorite new go to milk tea places because of their awesomely cute/beautiful bottles! It's become one of my hobbies to get my drinks with the special glass and many places have started this trend.  The best thing about Roasting Water is that all their drinks come in their bottles.  There's no extra charge and the prices are very reasonable.
A good and bad thing is that they often change their bottles so if you see a previous design that you liked, it may be gone in a flash! These mermaid bottles were from a while back and they were quite beautiful.  They use to do glass bottles with wooden corks but now they use plastic bottles.  I kind of missed the glass bottles, even though the kids were not too tight.

As part of their store decor, they use super cute cups that make you want to buy or take tons of photos.  Sadly, those cups are not for sale ;(.  They've recently caught on that it would be lucrative to sell all these cute cups! So some are available and some are limited items that come with regular milk tea.  I totally bought the gimmick and bought the super expensive cups/containers lol.  If you go, try the smoothies and fun tea combos.  If you just want tons of their bottles, you can cheat and buy their Vietnamese coffee like I do since they are one of the cheaper items that still tastes great.

My sweet friend brought me snacks back from Japan that were a real treat.  I received these Kabaya Pureral Gummy from her.  As soon as you tear the top seal, you can smell the fragrant grape flavor! You just might salivate instantaneously from the scent!
Inside the delicious jelly shell is a gooey grape soft jelly.  It's almost like biting into a chewy grape, but even better! :) Leave it to the Japanese for some fun innovative treats.  I'd definitely pick more of this up if I go back to Japan or if they are sold here too.

After coming back from Japan, I've been craving okonomiyaki.  It's a specialty that came out of Osaka, where I visited. I found this delectable hole in the wall that spoke no English at all and only had a Japanese menu.  There's not many places to get okonomiyaki, even in So Cal!
So what's a girl to do when she has a craving?  Make her own! Answer solved! I've never made okonomiyaki and decided to do it on a whim.  Luckily OtaJoy by Otafuku at the Winter Fancy Food Show and they make it easy to create at home.  They have instructions on the back to show how to make it at home with some simple steps.  All you have to do is buy the few ingredients you need to create this masterpiece.  It's pretty much: pork belly, cabbage, their flour, their sauce, egg, and water.
Even if it says you can use salad mixes, be sure to take the time and cut the cabbage.  It's the traditional way and the best tasting.  Of course I put extra pork belly inside.  Instead of putting it on layer by layer, I chop up the pork belly and mix it all in.  I don't have the traditional grill they use at restaurants so I just use a normal pan and lots of oil to pan fry the ingredients.  Be sure to use a paper towel to pat down the excess oil before you drizzle the sauces.  I was too lazy to find bonito flakes so I used some furikake to add more flavor.  So tasty! I make it all the time now :D

Gourmet Pigs gave me a few choices to meet up and I decided to choose Mr. Matcha because of the name.  Ever since Japan I've been craving matcha so I thought this was the perfect place.  Then I went online to look at what they served. At first I was kind of disappointed in the choices but I was glad to be proven wrong :).
I got their matcha and black sesame soft serve in their black cone.  The color combo was fun, but most importantly I liked the taste.  They claim to serve organic grade A matcha and the flavor was decently strong, unlike some other soft serve places.  The black sesame had a nice deep aromatic flavor.  I would definitely skip the come next time because if you eat slow it becomes soggy and it has no special flavor.  It is great for photos so I decided to get the cone ^_~.

Before I left for Japan, I wanted to buy the cute sushi cupcake in honor of our trip and pre-celebration of Ms. Lin Guide's b-day.  It's technically after mine but she won't be around so I celebrated it early lol.
The store is tucked away in a business strip mall so it can be easily missed and parking was a little difficult.  Keep an eye out for the suite number as your guide.  They have a bunch of cupcakes on display as you go in.  Some were super cute like the Cookie Monster and the poop emoticon lol.  The other cupcakes looked tasty too but I was on a mission.
I didn't see any of the sushi cupcakes that I specifically came for! Luckily they still had some left in the back stored.  Apparently they are not always available and can run out so be sure to call ahead of time if that is what you are looking for.  They only had the box set, which is pretty pricey for the size.  It's about the size of a bigger cut sushi roll piece and about the price of a cupcake.  Still, it's worth the experience for the fun and cuteness.

All in all they have some cute items and were friendly.  Most importantly the cupcakes were not bad.  They were sweet and had a nice smooth texture.  You can tell the used good ingredients.  The only con was the price of that box.  It's almost a better deal to get a cupcake, size wise.

Sorry for the long hiatus.  It's been a long road to recovery but in the meantime I still tried to fit in some good and fun :).
For this year's birthday, I decided to take one item off the bucket list and it is to go to Japan! Return to my so call roots lol.
Here is just a small preview of some of the travel and fun.  Stay tuned for more updates!

P.S. Even in September it is sooooooooo hot and humid in Japan.  Try to go when the weather is better or more colorful scenery, sure it may be more expensive but it'll be more enjoyable and worthwhile! That's what I've learned as will pass on this advice 😇
